One of the key skills of any great leader is having the ability to know when to pass your work onto someone else who can get it done, which is, of course, called delegating. Any manager who can’t delegate effectively is going to struggle to get their own work done as well as affecting team morale and risking their own health through burn-out. More than 85% of managers admit that they should delegate more but are held back by a variety of reasons. They include feelings of guilt, bad habits or having a lack of trust in their staff. However, the benefits of delegation are clear, with CEOs who delegate have been found to generate 33% more revenue than those who don’t, while studies show that managers can delegate up to 20% of their work without any decline in productivity. Not delegating can make you feel more in control, but the negative effects are obvious. With too much on your plate, you can suffer from exhaustion, decision fatigue, and timekeeping issues, while your team isn’t given the chance to develop their skills and end up feeling like they aren’t trusted, which leads to disengagement and lower productivity all around. The good news is that if you struggle to delegate to your staff, there are ways you can get better at it. One easy way to do it that also encourages you to be more open and trusting with your staff is to make yourself accountable to them when it comes to delegation. 6 Cognitive Biases That Are Hurting Your Career We like to consider ourselves rational. That when faced with a decision, we carefully weigh the evidence, use logic to reason to logical conclusions, and take action based on careful thinking. Even those of us who make decisions based on our intuitions â€" our gut feelings â€" believe that we could justify them if questioned.The reality is often entirely different. We’re prone to making decisions based on heuristics that are sometimes helpful, but often wrong, especially in the business environment. Biases and fallacies can lead us astray, damaging productivity and revenue.evalDaniel Kahneman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist who extensively studied heuristics and biases with his collaborator Amos Tversky, describes how our thinking can be divided between two systems. System One makes fast, heuristic-based decisions. And System Two is the logical, procedural system of careful thought.Both are essential, but System One â€" the default, low-effort system â€" often causes us to make non-optimal decisions. And any career-oriented professional who makes non-optimal choices is unlikely to prosper.The bad news is that it’s almost impossible to avoid System One-derived errors completely. They’re baked into the way we think. But knowing about the biases and fallacies that distort decision-making is the first step in avoiding them.Legendary investor Charlie Munger, the business partner of Warren Buffett, attributes much of his success to understanding how people’s biases lead them astray.1) Confirmation BiasevalThis is one of the simplest and most dangerous biases. We look for evidence that confirms our beliefs and ignore evidence that does not. Imagine a disagreement between two colleagues, one who thinks it’s a good idea to open a store in a new location, and one who thinks the company should invest more to promote existing positions.You can bet good money that each searches for evidence that backs their position and ignores evidence that refutes it. They ar e unlikely to spend any time at all considering proof that goes against them â€" they may not even recognize it as evidence at all. It’s obvious why this is harmful. Neither executive attempts to make a decision based on all the available evidence.Confirmation bias is hard to counter, but one way is to try to prove yourself wrong. Deliberately look for evidence that contradicts your position. Take some time to think about why you might be wrong â€" at the very least it will prepare you for objections to your approach.2)Planning FallacyevalHofstadter’s Law says “It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take Hofstadter’s Law into account.”People are terrible at estimating how long a project will take to complete. The Planning Fallacy makes itself known at every level of human activity, from determining how long it will take to pick the kids up from daycare to billion-dollar infrastructure projects. Everything takes longer than you think it will A more responsibl e strategy is to break down tasks into their parts and evaluation based on how long similar tasks have taken in the past. This probably won’t be entirely accurate either, but it’ll be closer than your initial estimate.3)Completion BiasChecking things off a to-do list is fun. It gives us the sense that we’re accomplishing something. But it also leads us to focus on easily completed tasks while ignoring more difficult long-term tasks.Many of us spend our time “putting out fires” â€" completing urgent tasks â€" and avoiding essential but non-urgent tasks such as long-term planning or reassessing strategic goals. The solution is straightforward: first, make sure that you set time aside to focus on more extensive and more complex tasks. Second, break complex tasks into smaller chunks that you can check off one-by-one.4) The Bandwagon EffectThe Bandwagon Effect, or groupthink, is thinking or behaving in a certain way because that’s how everyone else feels and behaves. It’s p ossible everyone might be doing a thing because it is the right thing to do. And it’s unwise to act outside of group norms just because they are group norms. But group members who adopt behaviors and thought patterns primarily because it’s what everyone else does are on a dangerous path.Businesses have to be agile to react to changing circumstances. Compare the recent histories of Kodak and Fujifilm to see why traveling a well-worn road isn’t always a good idea. The solution to this bias is the same as to many others: think for yourself. Don’t accept the status quo because it is approved by everyone else, but look for evidence that supports or refutes generally accepted propositions.5) Temporal DiscountingevalTemporal discounting is the tendency to regard outcomes as less important the further they are in the future. Studies have shown that if you offer someone $5 now or $10 in a month, they are more likely to take the $5 now. This is irrational, but it affects many business decisions.We often see the effects of temporal discounting on online security. Businesses make decisions in the short term that affect security in the long term. Perhaps they don’t regularly update their WordPress site or aren’t strict about data encryption. The long-term impact may be catastrophic, but because it’s rare and in the future, trivial short-term concerns are given more weight.Being aware of temporal discounting can help professionals to make decisions based on the real impact of future outcomes. The One Investment that Always Pays Off What I love about the new year is that it gives us all the chance to make a fresh start. It’s a time to set goals, make a plan, and take action to invest in ourselves. What would you like this year to be about for you? What does success look like and how will you know when you’ve achieved it? The “No Regrets” Life Taking advantage of the new year is crucial because, in real life, there’s no such thing as a “do over”. And that’s why I’m such a fan of living a “no regrets” life. These days, if there’s something I really want to do but my fear or anxiety or frugal nature are holding me back, I will push myself to do that thing. Whether it’s learning to do a handstand (yes, I did one the other day!), sending an email request to someone I don’t know (yet), or paying to join one of the top Mastermind groups in my field, I have benefitted greatly from taking the action. But I haven’t always been this way. Back in the day, I DID let those things hold me back. And it’s those “acts of omission” that can lead to regret. If I had a chance to do it over, here’s one thing I would change: I would have invested in myself even more. The Effort is Never Wasted The fact is, when you invest in yourself, the effort is never wasted. Investing in yourself is completely portable. You carry it with you wherever you go, even if your learning shows up in different, indirect ways. There may not be a direct line between your history degree and your legal career, but I’ll bet you’re applying the critical thinking skills you picked up in college and benefitting from the connections you made. And the biggest gain from training for a marathon may be the second order effect of building confidence, and not just cardiovascular fitness. When you invest in yourself, the skills, experiences and connections you make are all yours to keep and assets to build on, leverage and share in an endless variety of ways. It’s Crucial to Your Ongoing Success The time, money, and energy you invest to grow your skills, knowledge and experience are crucial to your future success. And it’s not “once and done” but rather an ongoing process of lifetime learning. And when you reach out and learn from others, it shortens the time it takes to succeed because you’re not reinventing the wheel. I like to find the best in the field and learn from them because it’s the most efficient and effective way. Now that I’ve gotten my priorities straight and learned to invest in myself, I thought you might like to know where I’m placing some of my investment chips right now. The Investments I’m Making Here are some of the things I’ve been investing in to get my new year off to a great start and make 2017 a breakthrough year. Business Coach:I’m renewing the contract with a group that helps entrepreneurs put structure and accountability into their businesses. Mastermind:I’ve re-upped my membership in one of the top Mastermind groups in my industry. Presentation Skills:No matter how good you are as a speaker, it helps to improve and refine. Fitness:In addition to going to my CrossFit gym three times a week when I’m at home, I’ve committed to finding a local CrossFit gym when I’m traveling. That way, I can sprinkle in a session or two in between days when I do Fitness Blender's YouTube workout videos and stay fit and strong while I’m away too. Personal Brand and Style:A few years ago, I finally threw in the towel and admitted needing help when it comes to clothes, shoes, accessories and so forth. Not only did I lack the time, I just didn't have a knack for it. This means  I make a conscious choice to carve out the time, apply my energies, and set aside some funds. In fact, setting aside these budget items makes it fun to go shopping” and decide how I’m going to spend that time, energy and money! Is it a Reason or an Excuse If your child is hurt, what’s the first thing you do? You drop everything and make your child the first priority. You do this in other situations too. Try to imagine your career transition as a priority of the same magnitude. It’s not about not having the time; it’s about making the time. It’s too easy to push it to the side.  Of course, there’s a difference between a reason and an excuse. The former is a legitimate demand on you or your time. Maybe you just started a new job and need to see if it is a fit. Maybe you won’t be vested in the retirement fund in your company for another six months and it’s really worth waiting that out. Maybe there are other extenuating circumstances: your mate just had surgery, your parents are failing. Believe me, there are a multitude of good reasons to stay in your job a little longer if you need to. Then there are the excuses. “I’ve got to sign up for the bowling league on the day I planned to work on my career.”  â€œI just had to see that concert.”  â€œI don’t want to give up two weeks’ vacation.” “I’ll do it tomorrow.”  Which makes me ask:  What day of the week is called “Tomorrow”? The point is when something is important to you â€" when it qualifies as urgent â€" you make the time. Here’s another thought: At the end of your life, do you want to say that you tried and possibly failed or that you didn’t try at all?         This helped me during my career transition; because I knew I would kick myself later if I didn’t at least look into coaching and try to start a business, even if I failed miserably. I couldn’t have lived with myself if I had copped out because of excuses. Action step: Make a chart in your journal with Reasons on the left side and Excuses on the right.
